African Perspectives

A new South African/Southern African Cinema have been established in Berlin, "African Perspectives".

Introduction

A new South African/Southern African Cinema have been established in Berlin, named: "African Perspectives". It is a cooperation of three non-profit-organisations, those as: AfricAvenir, INISA and the South African Club Berlin. Once a month we are screening a South African/Southern African Movie in a cinema right in the centre of Berlin (next to Hackesche Höfe/Alexanderplatz). The location is well known and easy in reach. The venue is simply perfect, as everybody says. It is right in the centre and supports our visions and is giving us very good times for our screenings. Our screenings are taking place on Sundays at a quarter past 5 o'clock p.m.

We usually ask for a reasonable entrance fee, which is € 5,00. One of our main intensions is to keep the entrance fee affordable for everyone. Altogether the project is meant to bring South African and Southern African issues straight into people's hearts over here and support South African movies. We want to create awareness of African people's life and in accordance with the some of our movies: we want to give people a chance to take part of the recent history of South Africa. By providing a platform for South African point of views in issues of social sciences, culture, history and attitude, we want to encourage Europeans and Africans to prepare the ground for mutual understanding and interest for the other.

We think movies are a wonderful and appropriate media to achieve this objective. Above all: it should give South African directors a new platform to discuss their views.

About us

AfricAvenir International e.V.
AfricAvenir International e.V. is a non-governmental and non-profit organisation engaging in political education and information dissemination both in Africa and in Europe. Its main section was founded in Douala, Cameroon, by Prince Kum' a Ndumbe III in 1990 while the European section was founded in 2000 in Berlin, Germany. From the very beginning, AfricAvenir's aim was to promote initiatives of endogenous development, to reduce Africa's external dependency and to restore consciousness and pride in local African culture and history. However, AfricAvenir has always been open to the rest of the world, promoting exchanges and trying to foster a 'Collective Destiny Perspective' so urgently needed in the emerging global village. AfricAvenir is committed to the goals of an African renaissance that is to root African development on the reality and culture of African peoples and to re-invent and re-construct the African continent according to African priorities and values.

INISA e.V. (Initiative of Southern Africa)
INISA was founded in 1995, our members are students, young professionals and other persons who are interested in Southern Africa. It is our aim to inform the German public about political, cultural and economic topics from the wider region of Southern Africa. We do this on workshops and seminars, with our newsletter "umbiki", our series of books and our close co-operation with the political journal „Afrika Süd". Further we make a contribution towards development in Southern Africa with a scholarship for South African university students from formerly disadvantaged communities.

South African Club Berlin e.V.
Is a non-profit organisation according German law. We are mainly collecting donations for our projects in South Africa. Those are: an adult educational school, especially for black women, who never had a chance to pass a school degree. Most of them had to bring up their children or had to look after other family members. It is called C-Wesi and placed in Wynberg, Capetown area. We also support an Aids- Project in the Township Masiphumelele, close to Fishoek/Kommetjie, called HoKiSA (Home for Kids in SA) and a community project in the Eastern Cape close to Lusikisiki (Flagstaff- Durban). After a year the pre-school is well known in the area. An Education program for young women and adults is in planning as well as a primary school.
