Apollo Film Festival 2005

Apollo Development Association: Economic development through culture, tourism and youth training

The 2005 Apollo Film Festival will definitely be the place to be in 2005 from the 22nd of September to the 01 of October. The annual festival held in Victoria West and now in its fifth year of successful running attracted a lot of attention in 2004. 2005 promises to be even better with screenings scheduled for the local townships. This year's theme is Township Cinema. It is the aim of the 2005 Apollo Film Festival to inform film attendants and the film world that communities such as Victoria West exist with the potential to cater for highly specialized and scarce needs of viewing films, especially South African and African films which receive very little or no airplay on the Mother Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).

The African Film Category will be reintroduced as a competition element this year as will be the case with the Student Category. For the African Film Category like it is with the South African category there are two sections; the documentary section and feature section. The Student Category comprises of the short film versus documentary section.

Tours around the townships and town as well as to Seekoeigat Dam ‘the festival attendee's favorite spot' will be organized. The usual performances by the local bands and choirs at the various venues will also attract crowds. For this year the services of Zola a well known musician and community developer are sought to perform at the gala event. It is also the aim of this festival to try securing old film legends like Mara Louw, and other well known figures within the film industry to attend this year's festival.

A LoveLife festival encompassing different sport codes is also envisaged, to take place near the venues where screenings are to occur. The Board of the Apollo Development Association would like to express their sincere gratitude towards the National Film & Video Foundation which is the major funder of the Apollo Film Festival 2005 and will continue to lend their support up to 2006. The Board also thanks in advance the Department of Arts and Culture, Tourism Enterprise Programme, Northern Cape Tourism Authority, Private Businesses in Victoria West & the community of Victoria West who will make sure that this year's festival is even merrier. The belief and commitment that the NFVF has towards the Apollo Film Festival confirms the ideal that micro film festivals are necessary to bring about the exposure and knowledge of the rich and scarce South African films to the poorest of the poor in rural areas such as Victoria West.

Currently entries such as Brown from Kali Van de Merwe, All I Want for Christmas and, All About Art from Lauren Groenewald, Taking Back the Waves by Nic Hofmeyr as well as the Importance of Being Elegant by George Amponsah and a lot more have been entered into this year festival.

Thank You
