The purpose of this trip was for practitioners from the various fields within arts and culture to meet with their Cuban counterparts and sow the seeds for future dynamic and sustainable collaborations between the 2 countries.
Serra returned with a few additions to his personal movie collection.
You are invited to a screening of the Award-winning Cuban classic
'MEMORIAS DEL SUBDESARROLLO"'
(Memories of Underdevelopment - with English subtitles)
'Memorias Del Subdesarrolla' (1968) was directed by Tomás Gutierrez Alea, Cuba's greatest and best-known director. Alea directed his first film in 1947 and has had many hits, including 'Fresa y chocolate' [Strawberry and Chocolate]. Alea was an ardent supporter of the revolution that brought Castro to power and has generally painted a more complex picture of Cuba in his films, than the rest of the world has been prepared to conceive. Alea passed away in 1996 with 25 films to his name. [Information on Alea has been taken directly from imdb.com]
'Memorias Del Subdesarrolla' is set in 1962 Cuba. Sergio, the protagonist, is the only one of his petite bourgeoisie family and friends, who has stayed behind in Cuba. Sergio says, 'It is easy to be a communist and a millionaire in Paris.'
The feature film will be preceded by a short documentary of the recent Cuban trip.
