Aspirant directors who want to sharpen their skills are invited to a four-Sunday Basic Workshop In Film Directing that takes place at the SABC in Sea Point on September 4, 11, 18 and 25, from 10am until 5pm on each day.
Hosted by the SABC, the informal workshop takes aspirant filmmakers through the filmmaking process from pre-production, production and into post-production, and also examines industries locally and abroad.
The workshop discusses the cinematic interpretation of the material by the director and the personal style invariably projected into the picture; the art and technique of storyboarding and its importance in the film process. It follows the process from casting to blocking a scene to discovering the rehearsal process. Picture editing and simple guidelines on practicing the art of directing are also discussed. It encourages filmmakers to discover the elements that make a good screenplay, and the requirements for being a good director.
The workshop is facilitated by Dirk Fourie, who has trained aspirant filmmakers in workshops for directors and Xperimental filmmaking the past three years. The independent short film In God's Country, which he produced, co-wrote and directed in 2004 received nine nominations at the Shortz Festival earlier this year. He recently wrote and directed the short film Trick that forms part of the Any Given Sunday project produced by Gregg Watt productions. For The Writing Studio Dirk is also the Festival Organiser of the Shortz Festival that was launched in Cape Town in February 2005.
The Basic Workshop in Film Directing is a great training ground for candidate film directors, actors and screenwriters who want to pursue a career in filmmaking.
The cost of the 4-Sunday workshop is R800, with a special discounted rate of R600 for scholards, students, staff of the SABC and members of The Writing Studio. Bursaries are also available on discretion for disadvantages candidates.
