The Italian Film Documentary Festival, MUSIC DOCFEST, has selected the filmed live production of Ballet Theatre Afrikan's recent season at the Johannesburg Civic Theatre to participate in the Festival which takes place in Rome from the 19th - 27th February 2005.
Christopher Kindo's "Sollopa" and Martin Schonberg's "Four Seasons" are featured in this film, vividly captured on DVD and video by Blixem Productions. Andre Calitz (director of Photography), Bertus Kirsten (Editing), Leon Hagen and Dirk Mostert are the creative team who used their expertise to hone the live performance into a beautifully crafted film, resulting in its admission to the Festival in Rome.
In "Sollopa", Chris Kindo has woven a story of sorcery and love in a kingdom somewhere between light and shade. Using the evocative, mesmerizing music of Night Prayers by the Kronos Quartet, this beautiful ballet has allowed Kindo to harness each dancer's individual strengths. "Four Seasons", choreographed by Artistic Director of BTA, Martin Schonberg, challenges six male and six female dancers to deliver exceptional technique coupled with artistic interpretation.
Driven by the music of Vivaldi, performed by the Johannesburg Music Initiative Orchestra under the direction of Elsabe Laubscher and Kutlwano Masote and conducted by Graham Scott, Schonberg's ballet arrests the ebb and flow of the seasons.
The production at the JHB Civic Theatre would not have been possible without the support of the National Arts Council as part of the 10 years of Democracy Celebrations, the National lottery and 102.7 Classic FM.
MUSIC DOC FEST is an International Festival of films and documentaries based on the world of music, ballet and dance in all their produced forms. Selection is carried out with the highest of standards, making this a coup for South Africa's film and dance world.
Ballet Theatre Afrikan will be presenting "Sollopa" and "Four Seasons" at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town from 23-27 Feb 2005.
