Cape Town Festival: 'Local Goes Vocal' at the Distrix Cafe offers a potent blend of spoken word and music.

The Distrix Café situated in District Six will form the backdrop to a gathering of Cape Town's most esteemed poets and musicians for a groundbreaking fusion of poetry, drama, music and storytelling aptly named ‘Local goes Vocal' on this year's Cape Town Festival programme. Running from 16 to 19 March nightly, the line-up of poets and musicians includes storyteller Malika Ndlovu, poetess Diane Ferrus, vocalists Tara Fataar, Erica Lundi, Michelle Maxwell and Cofield Mundi and Black Noise frontman, Emile Jansen. Each night is uniquely themed to showcase a particular genre within this sphere.

‘Local goes Vocal' is the unique creation of Cape Town Festival CEO, Yusuf Ganief, who saw the potential to create a platform for this essential performing arts genre, and approached the Distrix Cafè to host to the event. Says Ganief, "The Spoken Word is such a powerful platform and has the potential to transcend the norm and reach out to the soul. We are honoured and privileged to have the top calibre of poets, storytellers and musicians on the ‘Local goes Vocal' billing .

Each evening is beautifully themed to capture and present a specific form of poetry and music, and the entertainment starts at 20h00 and ends at 22h00.

Lady Jazz - The Rendezvous is a tribute to Jazz that has filled venues on the local music scene for a number of months. On the bill are some of Cape Town's first ladies of Jazz, Erika Lundi, Tara Fataar, Emily Bruce and Michelle Maxwell, each an established musician in her own right. This collaboration of vocal talent is a truly grand experience of vocal harmony, and offers a platform to showcase their individual talent as well as a synergy of soul-stirring vocal harmonics.

Cape Town is home to a powerful group of established wordsmith sisters who have come together under the umbrella of And the Word was Woman. This collaboration is co-ordinated by well-known performance poet, Malika Ndlovu and is an ensemble of established wordsmiths, united in their passion for illustrating life through the expressive channel of the spoken word. The line-up includes Mavis Smallberg, Primrose Mrwebi, Chantel Erfort, Sibongiseni Gabada, Lee Ann Davids, Khadija Heeger, Vanessa Herman and Warona Seane. Together they create an offering of words woven from free-flowing narrative, poetry, spoken word and song.

Folk songstress Cofield Mundy will keep the crowd enthralled with her Songs of Life renditions; Master Blaster, Emile Jansen from Black Noise will demonstrate his prowess behind the microphone and African folk singer, Adamu, accompanied by his guitar will melt your heart with his poignant repertoire entitled Songs from Angola.

Tickets can be booked through Computicket directly on 083 915 8000. The line-up is available on the Cape Town Festival website www.capetownfestival.co.za or pick up a festival programme at any one of the Festival venues, the V&A Waterfront or at Artscape.
