Documentary Filmmakers Meeting: Documentary Filmmakers Unite
JOHANNESBURG
Saturday 6th August, 1.30pm- 4pm
Conference Room, Old Fort, Constitution Hill, Braamfontein
(before the SABC Briefs meeting)
Encounters Documentary and Tri-continents Festival are calling a meeting of all documentary filmmakers to discuss the proposed formation of a documentary filmmakers' organisation.
As documentary filmmakers, how can we:
-
Develop our storytelling skills
-
Utilise technology more effectively when making our films
-
Market our films more effectively locally and internationally
-
Lobby the SABC and NFVF and others for better conditions and support for documentary filmmakers
-
Develop strategies to gain increased ownership of our films
-
Develop strategies to gain more value out of our archives
-
Build relations with international documentary filmmakers, funders, festivals, sales companies and distributors
-
Is a Documentary Filmmakers Organisation the most effective way to do this or are there existing organisations that can do this?
In the meeting there will be a briefing to discuss the present context:
-
Over the past few years we have seen television stations commissioning a increasing number of documentaries
-
The NFVF is supporting a host of documentaries
-
The documentary filmmaking community is growing
-
More South African documentaries are travelling internationally
-
ICASA have recently released SABC's licence conditions which stipulates an increased quota of documentaries across the channels
