The Cape Town World Cinema Festival (CTWCF), curated by Sithengi, captivated audiences around Cape Town during November last year with many screaming for an encore with the final credit roll. Well, be our guest. Sithengi, in collaboration with the Cape Film Commission (CFC), brings an awesome lineup of world class home grown films to the Design Indaba Expo, 25 – 27 February 2005 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC).
When we were approached by the Organisers of the Design Indaba Expo, to curate a mini film festival at the Expo, we grabbed the opportunity with both hands. The Design Indaba Expo aims to create discerning consumers through exposure to the principles and products of good design, resulting in the demand and production of innovative, evolving and excellent South African creative product. This too is the aim of Sithengi within the context of film, as we strive to promote the development of, and trade in, African and more specifically South African television and film product to a global market through the Cape Town World Cinema Festival (11 - 20 November 2005), incorporating the Sithengi Film & Television Market (15 - 18 November 2005).
Sithengi, in tandem with the South African film industry, has grown significantly in merely a decade. As we celebrate our 10th Anniversary this year, it is only fitting to start our celebrations early and join forces with other members in the industry like, in this instance, the Design Indaba, CFC, Commercial Producers' Association (CPA) as well as the filmmakers affiliated with these institutions, who have both contributed to and inspired our growth.
The mini film festival at the Design Indaba Expo offers a diverse showcase of South African feature films, short films, documentaries, music videos and commercials. Sithengi sourced the feature films, documentaries and short films and the CFC provided commercials and music videos; with the CPA also having contributed to the commercials segment. Films will be introduced by their respective directors or a suitable representative and each screening will be followed by a Q&A session.
Screenings will run daily from Friday, 25th to Sunday, 27th February, between 10am and 6pm in a purpose-built 60-seater mini-theatre on the floor of the Design Indaba Expo. The Expo takes place in the exhibition halls in the CTICC. Entry will be R30 for adults, with reduced tickets for students and pensioners.
Sithengi will also conduct the following presentations:
Friday, 25 February: Educational presentation to students from tertiary institutions on "Careers in Film & Television" at 12h30
Sat/Sun 26/27 February: Presentation to the public on "What is World Cinema?" at 12h00
We invite you to join us as we showcase not only the best of our most recent films, but also classics like e'Lollipop that has graced the big screen and touched the hearts of audiences as far as the Cannes International Film Festival.
