Improve Your Creative Writing Skills

Aspirant writers who would like to improve their writing skills and write the short story, novel, stageplay, screenplay or article of their dreams should challenge their creativity and attend a weekend CREATIVE WRITING workshop that takes place at the SABC, Auckland Park, Johannesburg on Saturday, June 4 and Sunday June 5, from 10am until 6pm on both days.

Hosted by the SABC and presented by The Writing Studio, the motivational and inspirational workshop examines the art of creative writing, developing your craft as a creative writer, exploring your creativity and making the most of your creative talent.

It aims to create tomorrow's success stories today, offering writers to turn their lives around, particularly those who have experienced abuse, neglect or abandonment.

It empowers writers to make the most of their creative talent and sharpen their skills.

During the weekend the writers will have an ideal opportunity to practise what most writers aspire to do - WRITE!

Practical writing exercises will allow the writers to unleash their creative energy and find their individual voices that will reflect the uniqueness of their experience, culture and history.

In examining the art of creative writing the writers will look at the stages and process of creative writing, different types of creative writing and how to write for different mediums - ranging from fiction, non-fiction and journalism.

The craft of writing section probes the difficulties of writing, finding the time to write, utilising sense impressions and freewriting to develop your craft, and how to write a short story.

The writers will explore their creativity and look at how to explore, find and recognise ideas, how to plot a book, the importance of fiction and essential components of a successful book, and investigate the elements of drama.

During the final session the writers will look at the raw material of character, the art of characterisation, how to find inspiration, common writing mistakes, basic copyright for writers, and useful tips.

The workshop is ideal for beginners and first-time writers, as well as professional writers who would like to share their experience with other writers and get an opportunity to explore other avenues. It is ideal for anyone who needs a jump start and take that step forward in writing creatively; during the workshop you will have the opportunity to write a short story and get positive feedback through practical and motivational exercises. T

he trainer is qualified Education, Training and Development Practitioner Daniel Dercksen, who has been teaching workshops and evening courses in scriptwriting throughout South Africa the past seven years, as well workshops in Creative Writing the past year. Mr. Dercksen is a published playwright, movie journalist and publicist, having worked extensively in movie journalism the for 22 years and in publicity, marketing and freelance journalism for 15 years.

The cost of the four-Sunday afternoon workshop is only R600, with a discounted rate of R500 for students, scholars, pensioners, SABC staff, and members of SASWA. Bursaries are available for disadvantaged writers.
