The free June Shortz Festival on Thursday, June 30, at City Varsity Film and TV School's Mini Cinema, features a short film and documentary from Cape Town, and as short film from Tswane.
Established in January this year, the monthly Shortz Festival takes place on the last Thursday of each month until November and will then culminate in The Best of Shortz in December.
Shortz proudly showcases the talent of video and filmmakers throughout South Africa. It also affords those working in the industry, or those who have an interest in new work by emerging filmmakers, an exciting opportunity to network.
The programme of June 30 features Cape Town videomaker Craig Carnock's ‘Sinking F8' is a short film that deals with the consequences of gambling and alcohol abuse as seen through the eyes of a tortured old man; Cape Town documentary makers Sylvie Groschatau-Phillips and Jana Kolodziej' ‘Beyond the Institution: Oude Molen Village, is a documentary short that approaches the historical, environmental and social aspects of the colourful community of Oude Molen Village through a mosaic of interviews, archives and historical research; and Tswane director Stephan Niewoud's ‘Granny's Kitchen ' is a compelling life drama about compassion set around a regular corner café. The relationship between the bum and the shop owner (Granny) is one of contrast as she curses him at first but eventually finds compassion with his attitudes when a desperate situation unfolds.
Admission to the JUNE SHORTZ on June 30 is free. It starts at 6pm for 6.30pm with drinks served from 6pm. There will be a cash bar. Booking is essential as the Mini Cinema only has limited seating.
