Press Release: Congratulations Tsotsi, from Sithengi!

Sithengi is proud of the achievement of the Producers, Director and cast of Tsotsi - we are honoured to have been able to show Tsotsi as our Opening film at last years Cape Town World Cinema Festival (CTWCF) and we believe that it is very important that we are able to celebrate these films at home in our own country at our Festivals.

We hope that this win by Tsotsi will result in increased funding from government in this sector but also an increase in investor confidence in the local film industry and the participation of the private sector not only in filmmaking but also in events like film festivals which do so much to launch South African films onto the international marketplace.

"Tsotsi" was a UK/SA co-production and was made despite the fact that a co-production treaty between the UK and SA has yet to be signed. We hope that the success of this film will spur on those that are responsible to sign the treaty to allow for more UK/SA co-productions to take place.

"Tsotsi" has demonstrated that South Africans possess talent in all areas of filmmaking. We hope that it inspires a new generation of filmmakers in the country and that supporting institutions like the NFVF, the Film Commissions, Sithengi and other film festivals will be able to continue to nurture this talent through the coming years.

We would also like to congratulate seven other films, also shown at the CTWCF last year, that were either nominated for, or awarded an Oscar: The Constant Gardener by Fernando Meirelles; The Emperor's Journey by Luc Jacquet; Good Night and Good Luck by George Clooney; A History of Violence by David Cronenberg; Hustle and Flow by Craig Brewer; Murderball by Dana Adam Shapiro & Henry-Alex Rubin and Paradise Now by Hany Abu-Assad.

As we celebrate this accolade with the rest of the South African film fraternity, Sithengi continues to showcase these and other dynamic films of international impact and impetus through the CTWCF, whilst developing and promoting local films to a global market through the Sithengi Film & TV Market.
