Sewende Laan Roadshow to visit Mitchells Plain

The highly popular Afrikaans television soap opera, Sewende Laan, is to visit Mitchells Plain in October as part of a groundbreaking partnership between Artscape, the hub of the performing arts in the Western Cape, and the Afrikaanse Taal en Kultuurvereniging (ATKV) to promote cultural activities in Mitchells Plain.

The roadshow consists of a spectacular variety performance by the cast of the soap opera complemented by other celebrity appearances such as Bianca of Idols.

In the run-up to the Sewende Laan Roadshow these two organisations will present a series of workshops ranging from playwriting, indigenous music, HIV/AIDS awareness, Ubuntu to Hip Hop and the music industry.

These workshops will be presented at Artscape's satellite theatre at the Alliance Francaise du Mitchells Plain in Wall Street, Portlands, opposite the Mitchells Plain transport interchange. The satellite theatre was opened in 2001 with a performance of the Three Tenors.

"Teachers, community theatre groups and NGOs in the arts and culture arena are all invited to join a planning meeting on Wednesday, June 1, 2005 at 15:00 (3pm) at the Alliance's offices to put an exciting programme together," says Marlene le Roux, Artscape's Director of Audience Development and Education.

"The meeting is open to all arts and culture co-ordinators, teachers and NGOs working in the area. We want to involve as many organisations as possible to stimulate cultural activities in the Mitchells Plain area," she says.

Plans for the indigenous music workshops include lectures and practical sessions by well-known local musicians such as Natalia da Rocha, Sylvia Mdunyelwa (Mamma Kaap) and Elzette Germishuys. They will explore indigenous Xhosa, Malay and Afrikaans songs as part of the workshops.

Leading drama consultant, Prof Roy Sargeant, will head the playwriting sessions and the ATKV will be responsible for the Ubuntu workshops.

The entertaining lifeskills programme, Soundtrack 4 Life, will present HIV/AIDS awareness sessions for teachers and hip hop celebrity, D'Low, will be provide insights into the music and hip hop industry.

"Artscape is committed to bringing theatre to the people and also to bringing people to the theatre. This partnership programme will bring theatrical experiences closer to the people and stimulate indigenous cultural activities in the area.

"Interested parties can call Mike de Beer of Artscape at Tel: 021 410 9934 for more information on the planning meeting," says Ms Le Roux.
