Shoot Your Own Digital Video

A 4-Sunday Xperimental Digital Video Production workshop takes place at the SABC, Sea Point, on May 8, 15, 22 and 29, giving novice filmmakers an opportunity to shoot their own independent short film.

Hosted by the SABC and presented by The Writing Studio, this four-Sunday workshop is aimed at novice videomakers who are interested in making an independent short film on digital video. The filmmakers who attend the workshop will have to bring their own Digital cameras to shoot their short film.

On the first day of the workshop the filmmakers will examine the pros and cons of being an independent filmmaker, explore the Experimental Short Film as an individual medium, and select a screenplay that has been written by scriptwriters who attended the studio's scriptwriting workshops earlier this year, or develop their own project. Topics to be discussed are what to look for in a screenplay, looking at pre-production, the casting, the production schedule and getting to know your camera.

The second day of the workshop looks at visual design and the production shoot: reviewing production break downs, working with actors, rehearsal as development, blocking the action, interpretation and style, and basic lighting techniques.

The Dailies and Post Production is on the programme for the third day: the footage that has been filmed will be viewed and discussed. The group will then discuss picture editing, the use of sound and music as emotional enhancement, and summarise the post-production process.

The final day presents a viewing of the final product and discussions on the marketing campaign, and how to sell the short film to film festivals and markets.

Following the workshop an the Xperimental Short Films will be screened at the Cape Shortz Festival. 'The Jersey', one of the short videos that evolved out of the Xperimental Digital Production workshop at the end of last year, received several nominations during its screening at the Cape Shortz in February.

The trainer is writer-director Dirk Fourie, who has been presenting workshops in filmmaking and film directing the past two years, as well as a short course at City Varsity Film and Television School.

The cost of the four-Sunday workshop is R800. There is a discount for registered students and scholars, pensioners and members of SASWA and the IPO. Bursaries are available on discretion for unemployed filmmakers.
