Short Video Production Workshop - SABC Cape Town, August, 7, 14, 21, and 28

Emerging videomakers and scriptwriters have an unique opportunity to join forces in making independent short video with a four-Sunday Short Video Production Workshop that takes place at the SABC in Sea Point on August 7, 14, 21 and 28.


Hosted by the SABC, the 4-day workshop is aimed at novice videomakers who are interested in making an independent experimental 5-minute short videos on digital format that will be analysed and developed for screenings at film and video festivals. The videomakers will have the choice of selecting scripts written by aspirant writers who attended workshops in scriptwriting presented by The Writing Studio, or filming their own scripts.

The Short Video Production workshop takes place on Sunday August 7 and 4 from 10am until 5pm, and from 2pm until 5pm on Sunday, August 21 and 28.

The trainer is Dirk Fourie, who has been teaching workshops in filmmaking and directing for The Writing studio the past three years. He received an Honours Diploma in Film and Television Production Techniques at the acclaimed City Varsity Film, Television and Multimedia School in Cape Town, receiving numerous awards and recognition for his short films. Since his studies he has been working in the commercial and feature industries as script supervisor on productions such as the international feature Adrenaline and the highly successful British children's television series Cavegirl. Dirk also produced, directed and photographed a music video for the National Television and Video Association in the Western Cape's annual Training Initiative. In 2002 he directed a local documentary for Robert Lewis Productions and served as Technical Director on the 25th Annual Stone Awards held in Cape Town at the end of 2003.

The independent short film, In God's Country, which he produced, co-wrote and directed in 2004 received nine nominations at the Shortz Festival earlier this year.He recently wrote and directed the short film Trick that forms part of the Any Given Sunday project produced by Gregg Watt productions.

During the Short Video Production Workshop the videomakers will examine the experimental short video, what drives a short film, choosing the screenplay, pre-production planning, securing locations, the casting process, the production schedule, getting to know your camera, working with actors, the visual design of the video,picture editing, post production, and distribution and marketing.

The students will develop their screenplays and begin production on their short film. Following the workshops the short films will be edited and completed with assistance from trainer Dirk Fourie.

The cost of the four-day workshop is R600. There is a discounted rate of R400 for registered students and scholars, pensioners and members of SASWA and the IPO. Bursaries are available on discretion.
