Sithengi bids farewell to deceased founding member, former chairperson and CEO, Richard Ishmail

The Sithengi board, management and staff bid farewell to Richard Ishmail, whose tragic and untimely passing leaves a certain void within the media and film industries.

“On behalf of Sithengi we would like to express our deepest sympathy to the family, friends, colleagues, associates and industry who are mourning the loss of a treasure that our industry has held dear – Richard Ishmail. Richard has made a legendary impact through his contribution in the establishment of Sithengi, which facilitates the development and growth of the film and television industry. We are shocked and devastated at the manner in which his life ended. The only service that we can do for him is to continue his legacy and to fulfill his dream to create a sustainable film and television industry.” Stated the vice chairperson of the Sithengi Board, Ms Yvonne Kgame.

Sithengi CEO, Mr Michael Auret, added. “Sithengi would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to the loved ones of Richard Ishmail, one of the founders of Sithengi, the first chairperson and a subsequent CEO. We were shocked at the news that someone who has dedicated his life to serving his community, especially the film community through the Film Resource Unit (FRU), UIP Distribution and Sithengi could be cut down at the prime of his working life.”

As part of Sithengi’s 10th anniversary celebrations in 2005 Richard was honoured for his roles as former chairperson and CEO of Sithengi during which terms he contributed significantly to both the governance and development of the organisation. He has continually affirmed his ongoing support not only for Sithengi, but the broader film & television industry with great passion.

Richard is remembered for his entrepreneurship, leadership and social consciousness. The latter was manifest in his commitment and dedication shown as CEO of The Big Issue magazine, in which professional capacity he served until last month.

“We will cling to the memories of all the good times we had with him as we wish him peace and eternal light upon his final journey. May his soul rest in peace.” Encouraged Ms Kgame.
