The third Cape Town World Cinema Festival (12-20 November 2004) is the premiere celebration of Cape Town’s culturally and racially diverse film productions.
The Festival has doubled to include more than 90 films from 25 countries As a non-profit organization, the Cape Town World Cinema Festival (CTWCF) is much broader and deeper than ever before.
Not only will Cape Town be set to entertain traditional filmgoing audiences, there are also more events centered on Festival screening venues in diverse communities as part of an extensive audience outreach programme. The objective of the outreach programme is to raise the appreciation of local and African film creating a broader awareness and knowledge of South African film, African and other world cinema films.
CTWCF's main focus is to draw in local communities situated in and around Cape Town in order to ensure that more public participation takes place at this year's event. The 2004 Festival will have a special focus on South African films in line with South Africa's Ten Years of Freedom Celebrations.
The Festival will particularly concentrate on films of countries in transition. These countries include Brazil, India, Angola, Jamaica, Slovenia as well as Afghanistan. The picture that is emerging of South African filmmaking 10 years into freedom is one of vibrancy, expression and creativity - from audiences and directors alike.
CTWCF has a significant value for both local and international filmmakers. The Sithengi Film and TV Market (CTWCF's programme) plays a pivotal role in providing trade exchange amongst filmmakers, distributors, content buyers who are interested in acquiring South African product. Says Festival Director for the CTWCF, Michael Auret: "Film is an important cultural domain in any country, but particularly so in South Africa. As we celebrate our first ten years of freedom, it is imperative to ensure that titles confirmed for screening are able to cross over all historically created divisions.
The CTWCF will continue to strive to create an entertaining and prolific line-up of events for all South Africans to enjoy".
