Sithengi CEO Steps aside as Sithengi re-structured
After the huge success of the 10th anniversary edition of the Sithengi Film and TV Market which saw over 1700 delegates from 54 countries attending as well as a diverse and eclectic Cape Town World Cinema Festival which saw a 10% rise in audience attendance from 16 000 to 18 000, Festival Director and CEO, Michael Auret is stepping aside to allow new blood to take the Sithengi vision forward and to allow him to explore other opportunities.

And the HIVOS/Sithengi Film Fund Winners are...
A first call for projects in April elicited over 150 applicants for features, short films and documentaries. Seventeen awards were made during this first round of disbursements to first-time and experienced writers, directors and producers. The disbursement was spread across the SADC region, encompassing filmmakers from Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Mozambique, Malawi and Zambia, as well as South Africa. In several cases, co-production partnerships across borders were able to enhance submissions.

At a Board meeting held on 28 April 2005 Sithengi, the curator of the Cape Town World Cinema Festival (CTWCF) and Sithengi Film & TV Market, elected its new Office Bearers. Mr Eddie Mbalo, NFVF CEO, has been elected chairperson of the board with Ms Yvonne Kgame, SABC Content Hub, as Vice Chairperson. The NFVF and SABC are Sithengi's two main financial partners. The Sithengi Board is constituted of representatives of Sithengi's main financial partners and industry: Department of Communications (DOC), Department of Arts & Culture (DAC), National Film & Video Foundation (NFVF), SABC, City of Cape Town, Provincial Government of the Western Cape and industry representative, Ms Seipati Bulani-Hopa. Additional members of the board are being nominated.

Co-production between South Africa and Italy to be concluded in Cannes 2005
South African producer, Richard Green (Jazz Spirit Productions), will meet with his co-production partners from Italy, Enrico Colletti of Anaada Films and Massimo Vigliar, of Surf Films in Cannes to sign a co-production deal for John Kani's adaptation of Nothing but the truth. On the weekend that Dv8’s second feature film, MAX and MONA, received its South African mainstream theatrical release through distributor Ster-Kinekor, it also garnered a Best First Time Feature (Prix Oumarou Ganda) award at the FESPACO Film Festival in Ouagadougou – Africa’s premiere Film Festival. This prize goes to the first feature film by a director whose creative efforts are highly remarkable and deserve encouragements. It is worth 2 million CFA francs (US$4 000).

Ramadan Suleman graduated from the Center of Research and Training in African Theater in 1981. Besides directing several plays, he helped to found the first black theater in South Africa, the Dhlomo Theater.

August 1st 2005, Dick Willemsen ends his term as director of the Maurits Binger Film Institute.
During his directorship the Binger has focussed more strongly on the filmmaker and his artistic voice, as much as it has created space for alternative storytelling structures. The institute has thereby reoriented itself towards international auteur cinema, while strengthening its foundations in writing and directing craft.

It is the norm to be sitting in the Audience at the Baxter Theatre with all forms of artistic expression reverberating from the stage, but at the recent Imbizo Focus with the Minister of Arts & Culture, Dr Z Pallo Jordan, the tables were turned somewhat with filmmakers, visual artists, writers, poets, stage actors and theatre practitioners exchanging the stage for a seat in the audience to express what came from the convictions of their heart and not a script. The Imbizo was also attended by Mr Eddie Mbalo from the NFVF.
